Proven & Experienced

I ask for your vote so that I may continue my life’s work of bringing justice to our community.

An Experienced Judicial Officer

Thank you for your interest in learning about my campaign to be the next Superior Court Judge for the County of San Luis Obispo.

I am currently Commissioner for the San Luis Obispo Superior Court, having been unanimously elected two years ago to that position by the judges of the Superior Court. A Superior Court Commissioner is a judicial officer with job responsibilities very similar to those of a judge.

As Commissioner, I have presided over and adjudicated small claims, traffic, family treatment court, juvenile truancy and infractions, juvenile drug court, misdemeanor criminal matters, and mentally disordered offender trials in the courts in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles.

Trusted in the Courtroom

The judges who have worked with me these last two years, presided over many of my trials over the last 25 years, and who know my character, temperament and work ethic, have endorsed my candidacy. As have many retired judges and commissioners, police chiefs, attorneys, and other members of the community.

For 23 years, I was a criminal prosecutor, successfully prosecuting the most dangerous criminals and some of the most complex and high-profile cases in our County’s history.

As a Commissioner and prosecutor, I have worked collaboratively for more than 10 years with law enforcement, Probation, Drug & Alcohol Services, Social Services, Public Health and Behavioral Health departments, other treatment providers, defense attorneys and Creative Mediation Services, to find effective alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders, address crises like the opioid epidemic, and make our justice system work better.

I started my career as a civil litigator at a large law firm, appearing in both state and federal courts, and worked pro-bono, representing indigent clients in unlawful detainers matters and in the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.

Dedicated to Public Service

I have dedicated most of my adult life to seeking truth and justice – for victims, for defendants and for the people of California and San Luis Obispo County.   I have always sought to do so fairly and ethically, by working hard and using all of the legal skills and knowledge mastered in my 28-year legal career. I have learned that a judge must be fair, patient, have common sense and be more interested in listening than talking. More than anything, a judge must genuinely care for people and have an abiding conviction in the laws and constitutional principles by which we govern ourselves.

25 years ago, as a young Deputy District Attorney, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitutions of the United States and the State of California, and have done so in service to my community since then.  I ask for your vote now so I might take that oath again, to continue to serve you and each member of our community as your Superior Court Judge.

Thank you and remember to vote by mail beginning May 7 or at your polling station on Election Day on June 5th, 2018.

Tim Covello

Superior Court Commissioner
Candidate, Superior Court Judge

Tim is running to replace retiring Superior Court Judge Barry T. LaBarbera, who has wholeheartedly endorsed him:

“He was the best prosecutor that I ever worked with. He’s about as good a prosecutor as I’ve ever seen. He’s clearly the most qualified candidate.”
